Located at the base of the Caucasus Mountains Sochi is unofficially the summer capital of Russia. But being so close to the mountains also makes it a popular winter resort. There are also many minerals springs giving Sochi a vibrant Spa scene.
The areas surrounding Sochi has status as a national park, known as the Caucasus State Biophere Reserve. The park supports numerous stunning waterfalls as well as many caves - where traces are found of Europes first ancestors, the Cro-Magnon men. The park also holds a collection of the most rare and exotic species of tropical flora found in Russia.
The olymics has also created some controversy based in the fact that this region has seen no less than three major wars, including the Caucasian War; which caused the genocide of the Circassian people. Circassians believe the Olympic Village will be built to cover this ugly memory in this the 150th anniversary of the Circassian Genocide. The Russian government has yet to take responsibility for the genocide.
